A familiar flavor can carry a story across generations and places. Long before Kiam Kiam Mango Bites existed, plum was already a familiar flavor to our founder, Jon Dee.Growing up in the Philippines in a Chinese-Filipino family, he remembers the distinctive sweet, sour and salty character of plum.Years later, that familiar flavor became part of the inspiration for Kiam Kiam — this time paired with Philippine mango.
A flavor from childhood
For Jon, plum wasn't something discovered through a product-development brief or a market trend. It was a flavor he already knew. That memory stayed with him. Eventually, it became part of the idea that would become Kiam Kiam.
The plum ingredient used by Snacko has its own story of place. Our brand information states that plum fruit powders are sourced from plum-growing communities in Guangdong and Fujian, China, and from plum-growing regions of Central Taiwan. Those regions have established histories of growing and processing plums.
Green-plum production is established in several parts of southern China and Taiwan. In Fujian, official agricultural sources identify Zhao'an as a major green-plum production area and document a substantial processing industry. Yongtai is also identified by the Fujian government as one of the province's important green-plum producing regions. In Taiwan, the Ministry of Agriculture identifies Nantou as a major green-plum producing region, with production historically concentrated around areas including Xinyi, Shuili and Guoxing. These regional facts provide context for the ingredient's broader provenance. They do not establish the exact farm, variety or processing method used for Snacko's specific plum powder.
More than fresh fruit
Plums in these regions have also been associated with processing and preservation. Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture documents a wide range of processed plum products, including preserved plums, plum juice, plum vinegar and other products.Fujian agricultural authorities likewise document extensive green-plum processing, including preserved, salted and other plum products in Zhao'an. That history helps explain why plum can carry such a distinctive flavor identity.
Kiam Kiam didn't begin with the idea of reproducing a traditional plum product exactly. The starting point was a familiar flavor — and the curiosity to see what could happen when that flavor met something distinctly Philippine. That something was mango. Philippine mango became the other half of the idea.Kiam Kiam Mango Bites bring together Philippine mango and distinctive plum flavor, connecting a fruit closely associated with the Philippines to a flavor that had personal meaning for our founder. The result is not intended to reproduce the past. It is our interpretation of it.
At Snacko, we believe ingredients have stories of their own.Knowing where an ingredient comes from gives us a better connection to the food we're making and the places behind it.That's why provenance matters to us — not simply as a label, but as part of understanding what we're creating. We look to the past for inspiration and to the present for possibilities. Kiam Kiam is part of that approach: familiar flavors, Philippine ingredients and a modern interpretation. Plum may have started as a childhood memory. In Kiam Kiam, it became part of something new.
Today, that original idea lives in Kiam Kiam Mango Bites.Philippine mango provides the fruit at the heart of the product, while distinctive plum flavor connects it to the taste memory that helped inspire the brand.Kiam Kiam is made in small batches, with attention to flavor, texture and consistency.
